Shumen – A wonderful city

Located in the heart of Northeastern Bulgaria, Shumen is a city rich in history and fascinating landmarks. The tenth largest city in the country carries the spirit of antiquity while also developing as a modern and dynamic center. If you’ve never visited it, it’s a good idea to include it among the destinations you want to explore. Look for a hotel in central Shumen to be within walking distance of restaurants and local attractions.
Shumen boasts a millennia-old history, with the first traces of life in the area dating back to the 5th–6th century BC. Over the centuries, the city has been known by various names: Matiganis, Ganos, Simeonis, Shimeonit, Shumena, Shumna, Sumunum, and Kolarovgrad. The small Poroyna River flows through Shumen, originating from a spring on the Shumen Plateau.
Landmarks in and Around the City
The most iconic historical symbol is the Shumen Fortress, locally known as the Old Town. It is located 2 km west of the city, on the Shumen Plateau. Archaeologists believe the area was inhabited as early as the 12th century BC, with the first settlers likely being Thracians from the Getae tribe.
Nearby, you’ll also find the famous Madara Rider – the only rock relief in Europe from the early Middle Ages, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
During the Bulgarian National Revival, Shumen became one of the most important cultural and educational centers in the country. The first Bulgarian theater and the first symphony orchestra were founded here.
The city itself is also full of impressive sites.
The “Founders of the Bulgarian State” Monument is a majestic landmark located on the plateau above the city, built in 1981 to mark Bulgaria’s 1300th anniversary. The stone figures of Khan Asparuh, Tervel, and other rulers impress visitors of all ages.
Tombul Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the Balkans. Built in 1744, it continues to awe with its architectural beauty. It houses an impressive collection of over 150,000 artifacts.
The Regional Historical Museum is a favorite stop for history enthusiasts.
